The first step is to perform schedule maintenance in MS Project so that:

1. No work which has not been started remains earlier than the Status Date
2. No unfinished effort remains having an end date before the Status Date.
3. No Actual Begin Date is later than Status Date.
4. No Actual End Date is later than Status Date.

If you don't have Project using % Completed when performing schedule maintenance, Project won't know the best way it can adjust the timeline.
